Today we meet Erik Formoe, an artist whose work reflects art history with a modern spin
In the small town of Fredrikstad Norway where Erik grew up, his family's Christian faith meant spending time each week in bible studies. To help him remain still during these times, they handed him sketchbooks and pencils. A simple act that not only kept young Erik occupied, but also ignited his passion for art. By the age of 12, he was set on becoming an artist and has since built a career full of depth.

In the small town of Fredrikstad Norway where Erik grew up, his family's devout Christian faith meant spending time each week in quiet, reflective bible studies. To help him remain still during these times, they handed him sketchbooks and pencils. A simple act that not only kept young Erik occupied, but also ignited his passion for art. By the age of 12, he was set on becoming an artist and has since built a career full of depth.
Erik's determination led him to an art school in Oslo where his training during the 70s and 80s lacked modern digital distractions. He remembers, "We used painting techniques from the Renaissance. We made our own oil colors." This foundation played a pivotal role in shaping his artistry, emphasizing craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for art history.

French Impressionists, particularly Cézanne, Monet, and Manet, left an indelible mark on his art, and moved by their approach to painting outdoors, Erik began experimenting.* His style succeeds in integrating the precision of Renaissance compositions with the vibrant palettes of these impressionists.

Over the years, Erik has shifted to featuring portraits as a large part of his portfolio; however, a splash of impressionism has remained ever-present in his work. Portraits, with an air of mystery, became his signature. Describing himself as a "riddle teller", Erik employs subtle manipulations in his art, such as incorporating geometric shapes or intentionally leaving out certain facial features. The approach compels viewers to craft their own interpretations. "It's a dialogue between the image and the individual. I disturb the eyes of those who look at the painting," he explains.

Now, 70 years old and still anchored in his childhood town, Erik's dedication is evident in the two studios he's nurtured there. The passage of time has deepened his understanding of art and life. "At the same time, I've realized that we don't live forever. Now I want to concentrate only on what inspires me and what I want to do," he says.
In reference to the impact he’d like his art to have, Erik points to the famous words of Picasso. “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” Fitting indeed, as his work continues to bring moments of clarity and enjoyment to those who engage with it.

Footnote
*The unpredictable nature of Norwegian weather brought unique challenges to Erik's artistic endeavors. While many great Impressionists painted within the stable climate of southern Europe, Norway's ever-changing conditions meant that the same scene could shift dramatically from one day to the next. To combat this, he creates quick sketches and paintings while outdoors, then works on his final pieces in studio.
